Household essentials: the true-cost test

Packaging sizes and promotional claims can make a purchase look cheaper than it is. A better comparison starts with what one use actually costs.

Four checks

1. Compare unit prices

Calculate cost per ounce, sheet, load or use. Compare like with like and be careful when package sizes differ.

2. Include the extras

Add shipping, required accessories, refill costs and subscription fees. Check whether a low introductory price changes later.

3. Check durability and storage

A large pack is useful only if you have room to store it and can use it before it degrades or expires.

4. Verify returns

Read the seller’s return policy, warranty exclusions and who pays return shipping before ordering.
